El nombre de la provincia hace referencia a un grupo étnico local, los tsáchilas, también conocidos como los colorados por la costumbre de los tsáchilas (especialmente los hombres) de teñirse el pelo con pasta de achiote.
La capital de la provincia es Santo Domingo. Su población es de aproximadamente 500.000 habitantes en 2008, fluctuando ya que es la tercera ciudad con más población después de Guayaquil y Quito.
