The Congregation of the Marist Brothers is a Catholic religious congregation that is part of the Marist Family. It was founded in La Valla-en-Gier, department of Loire (France), on January 2, 1817 by Saint Marcellin Champagnat, a priest of the diocese of Lyon who was canonized on April 18, 1999 by John Paul II.
The Marist Brothers number approximately 3800 around the world and are not clerics; in fact, in the selection of postulants for the novitiate, no one with priestly aspirations is ever accepted. This is to ensure that the boarders have a special aptitude for the mission of education. The Institute has three types of establishments: the Postulancy (or Pre-Novitiate), the Novitiate and the Scholasticate (or Post-Novitiate).[1] After completing this process, the Marist Brothers are involved in running primary and secondary schools, universities, industrial schools, orphanages and foster homes in 79 countries on five continents.[2]
